Getting your Newsletters Read

Images and layout are important aspects to your newsletter, but the content is the biggest factor in determining the success of your campaign.
Copy needs to be relevant, interesting and (for the most part*) grammatically correct.

Here are a few simple steps to get you going.

  • Think about your audience / target market. Consider who your newsletter is going to, and write what they might want to read.
    * Also, write in a style that suits this demographic. A newsletter written for Corporates needs to be formatted correctly. Something targetting a younger audience, needs to speak
    to them, not at them.
  • Make it readable. Short, concise, easy-to-understand, to the point.
  • Headlines are key. Dynamic and interesting headlines will pique curiosity, and gain you more readers. Boring headlines usually equal boring content…
  •  Diversify content. Use a variety of topics and sections to interest a variety of readers. Include a “table of contents” if your newsletter has more than a few articles / sections.
  • Research and ask questions. When writing your article, make sure about the facts. Don’t make statements that you can’t back up with research and facts!
Ask “who”, “what”, “when”, “where”, “why” and “how”; and then answer these questions.
When using facts or stats collected by someone else, be sure to give the source / name of the person or company who provided the information.
  • Proofread. Read your article/s at least twice after completion, and ask someone else to do the same. Check spelling and grammar. Look for consistency, in text and tone.
If time allows, let the article sit for a day or two, and then proofread again. If you are satisfied, go ahead and publish…

Hopefully, this mini-guide helps you in your task! May all your newsletters be read, and never “spammed“! :-)
